Lisa, be a green and just sand and re stain the wood floors, no need to waste such beautiful wood. My parents did that once, moved into a house the floors were a sickly honey colour and hand then sanded down and stained dark. Looked awesome.
Michael, the current floors are laminate, so sanding and staining isn’t an option. Otherwise, I sure would have looked into that – whatever works to save money! 
Ah, what a drag! that sure is a good looking laminate! Totally had me! We put a wide-plank engineered hardwood maple floor in our place. Distressed and stained to resemble driftwood. Looks awesome.
